  • Time of day dictates circadian feasibility. Caffeine delay (ACT_004) makes sense at 8:00 and fails at 0:00. Light therapy (ACT_017) makes sense at 6:00, not 21:00.
  • Duration dictates how a stack fits. Walking 30 minutes (ACT_003) isStackable with sunlight (ACT_001) — they run simultaneously. The effort score is conservative — hours-of-attention × probability of skipping. White literature on willpower is mixed, but the Stacking Engine’s data confirm what each user experiences empirically: with effort kept below ~14 cumulative points per day, consistency holds; above that, drop-off starts to dominate.

Habit stacking: the technique

Two forms:

Anchor stack. Attach a new micro-behavior to an existing one. Morning coffee → after pouring, drink 200 ml of water first (50:50 hydration split); pour coffee only when the water is finished. The anchor is a stable cue; the new behavior runs in the same pre-existing attention window.

Common mistakes

  • Stacking too many high-effort tasks at the same anchor. Three effort-5 morning slots can be a real person; four is a friend-fiction.
  • Stacking without an anchor. “When I get coffee, I’ll do my sun, my move, my meditation, my planning, my journal, and my goal review” usually fails. Pick one anchor per cluster.
  • Ignoring time-of-day biology. Delaying caffeine fails when paired with morning productivity; meditation fails as a 17:00 anchor because HRV is already falling. Align stacks with circadian biology; it’s the same observation Andrew Huberman’s article starts with.
